The lifting is what breaks caregivers

Six, eight, ten transfers a day. Bed to commode, commode to chair, chair back to bed. Each one is a dead lift at an awkward angle, usually in a doorway or beside a bath, usually alone.

Most people manage until their back goes. Then two people need care instead of one.

This chair takes the weight so you don't. You position it, they sit, your foot does the lifting, and you roll them where they need to be.

How a transfer actually goes

Under a minute once you've done it a few times.

  1. Roll it in and lower the frame

    The backrest splits and folds back a full 180°, so the chair comes to them rather than the other way round. The base clears a low bed frame, so you can bring it right up to the mattress edge instead of working at arm's length.

  2. They lean on the chest pad

    They lean forward onto the padded chest support and hold the two grab handles. The chest and waist straps buckle around their back, so their weight is carried by the frame and not by their arms.

  3. Pump the pedal

    Step on the pedal a few times and the hydraulic ram raises the seat from 17 in up to 26 in — bed height to chair height and back. The release lever lowers them down under control, as slowly as you like. Your hands never take their weight.

  4. Release the brakes and go

    Four lockable 360° swivel castors, plus a hand lever on the push bar so you can slow it on a slope or a smooth floor. Up to the toilet, into the bathroom, under the dining table.

Two buckled straps hold them against the padded chest support. Fasten both before the seat leaves the bed.

Lockable castors and a hand brake

All four castors lock. There is also a lever brake on the push bar for controlling it while moving. Lock the castors before anyone sits down or stands up.

Comfortable enough to stay in

The seat isn't just for the thirty seconds of a transfer — people sit in it to eat, to watch television, to wait for someone. Thick sponge padding under PU leather on the seat and the backrest, a breathable mesh chest pad, and padded armrests.

The tray table clips on for meals and lifts straight off afterwards. It has two cup recesses, so a drink is less likely to go over.

Questions

Can one person use it on their own?

Yes — that's the point of it. The pedal does the lifting, so you're positioning and steering rather than taking their weight. Practise a few transfers with someone else present before you do it alone.

What if the person is heavier than 440 lb?

Don't use it. 440 lb / 200 kg is the rated limit for the frame and the hydraulic ram, and going over it risks the lift failing under load. You'd want a higher-rated patient hoist instead.

How much assembly is involved?

It arrives in main sections — base, gantry, seat and backrest, hydraulic ram — and bolts together with the spanners included. Most people take 30 to 45 minutes. Two pairs of hands makes it much easier, since the assembled chair is 80 lb.

Can it go in the bathroom?

Yes — it's designed to roll up to the toilet and to sit beside a bath, and with no electrics there's nothing to short out. It is not a wet-room shower chair, though: don't park it under running water, don't submerge it, and wipe the frame and the PU seat dry afterwards so the steel doesn't mark.

Is the commode bowl included?

Yes. The bowl and its slide-out holder come in the box at no extra cost. The seat has a commode-style opening above it, and the orange seat pad covers the opening when you aren't using it.

Will it fit through my doorways?

The chair is 26 inches wide, so it needs a 28-inch doorway or wider. Most modern interior doors are 28–32 in, but older houses and bathroom doors are often narrower. Measure your narrowest doorway and your bathroom turning space before ordering — that's the usual reason one gets sent back.

Does it work if the power goes out?

Yes. The lift is purely mechanical — a hydraulic ram driven by your foot on the pedal. There is no motor, no battery and nothing to plug in, so a power cut changes nothing.

Will I be charged customs duty?
